2021 Yamaha VX and GP WaveRunner series recalled because engine could stop suddenly

Approximately 300 examples of the 2021 Yamaha VX and GP model series – including SVHO models – are being recalled in Australia because the engine could suddenly switch off.

A safety recall notice has been issued for the 2021 Yamaha VX and GP model series because the engine could stop suddenly and eject the rider at speed, creating a risk of injury.

According to the recall notice published by the Australian consumer protection authority, 280 examples of the 2021 Yamaha VX and GP WaveRunner series – including SVHO models – sold from 30 November 2020 to 30 April 2021 are affected.

Affected models include:

  • 2021 Yamaha VX Deluxe 1050cc
  • 2021 Yamaha VX Limited 1050cc
  • 2021 Yamaha VX Cruiser HO 1.8
  • 2021 Yamaha VX Limited HO 1.8
  • 2021 Yamaha GP1800R 1.8
  • 2021 Yamaha GP1800 SVHO 1.8 Supercharged

The recall notice says:

A poorly-installed sensor in the shut-off switch assembly may allow water to seep inside the sensor (switch housing) and become corroded, causing an intermittent connection.

The hazards to consumers: an intermittent connection may result in a malfunction with the engine shut-off switch.

If the switch malfunctions, the engine may stop suddenly even though the lanyard is in place, or the engine may not stop when the lanyard is pulled.

This could result in loss of control of the watercraft and an accident causing injury or death.

The recall was originally published in May 2021 and was extended in May 2022 to incorporate more vessels.
