Yamaha Australia is recalling all 2016 and 2017 examples of the Superjet SJ700B stand-up watercraft because the hand-grips may not be secured properly and could cause the rider to injure themselves.
According to the recall notice published by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) “the handlebar grips may not be securely attached and may slip off the handlebar while in operation”.
The recall notice warns that “if the handlebar grips slip off, the operator may lose control of the (watercraft), which could cause an accident or serious injury.”
When the recall was published on 15 November 2016, Yamaha and the ACCC did not advise of the complete list of serial numbers (or HINs) of examples affected in Australia.
However the notice did say the total “frame numbers” affected globally ranged from F4D 0516357 to 0517691, which is a total of 1334 skis.
Given that Yamaha Australia sells about 50 stand-up Superjets each year, fewer than 100 watercraft may be affected locally.
As with all recalls, Yamaha says the repairs are free of charge and advises owners to contact Yamaha Australia (by visiting its website or by calling 1300 593 600), or contacting their local Yamaha WaveRunner dealer.
Yamaha has also asked former owners of the 2016 and 2017 Superjet (also known by the model code SJ700B) to advise if they no longer own the craft, so the company can try to locate the new owners and inform them about the recall.
