Surf Life Savers take delivery of 2023 Yamaha GP1800R WaveRunners

The Australian Lifeguard Service in NSW has added a trio of 2023 Yamaha GP1800R WaveRunners, part of a fleet of approximately 70 Jet Skis patrolling the coast.

Surf Lifeguards in NSW have been given another safety boost – with a trio of 2023 Yamaha GP1800R WaveRunners – after one of the most dangerous years on the water.

Three 2023 Yamaha GP1800R WaveRunners – delivered to the Australian Lifeguard Service this week by Sydney Watercraft – follow the roll-out of 11 examples of the 2023 Sea-Doo GTI delivered to Surf Life Saving NSW late last year, as part of a $1 million safety upgrade to beach rescue providers.

The total fleet of approximately 70 Jet Skis used by Surf Life Saving NSW – and the separately-run Australian Lifeguard Service that contracts to local and regional councils – comprises a mix of personal watercraft from both major brands, Sea-Doo and Yamaha, with each division able to select the model that best suits their needs.

The 2023 Yamaha GP1800R is the non-supercharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder version of the race-bred supercharged GP1800R SVHO. Both models share the same top deck and hull, which is well regarded for its agility and precision.

Lifeguards told Watercraft Zone two of the three 2023 Yamaha GP1800R WaveRunners delivered this week will be deployed on Sydney’s northern beaches while the third watercraft is destined for the north coast of NSW.

Jet Skis operated by Surf Life Saving NSW and the Australian Lifeguard Service typically clock up about more than 150 hours each year – over two to three years – before they are replaced by new models.

As previously reported, Jet Skis have been involved in more than 700 ocean rescues in NSW over the past two years and clocked up more than 23,000 hours of operation combined – according to figures provided by water safety authorities.
